I am excited about a number of projects in process. Please take a look at the call in the sub-tab for the cutting edge gender/sexuality/italy journal (complete articles in English or Italian due 6/15!). Along with managing editor, the indefatigable Nicoletta Marini-Maio, Ombretta Frau and I are co-editing the 10th volume of the journal. Ombretta and I first teamed up to write an article together for g/s/i back in 2015, and I am thrilled to be working with my friend, mentor, and role model, again, and this time, also with Nicoletta, Paola Bonifazio, and Ellen Nerenberg!
My other big editorial project, which is a joint effort with the illustrious Graziella Parati, is what I envision–and hope–will be a key book on early twenty-first century Italian feminism, provisionally titled Italian Feminist Thought Today and Tomorrow.
Currently I have three essays under review, two of which examine the works of Elena Ferrante from different angles (feminist and performative) and one that closely reads a play by Giuliana Musso for its invocation of a corporeal epistemology. I look forward to sharing more when those essays are published! I am also working on another piece that elaborates upon the Musso play, adding two others to read a trilogy of her three most recent texts as a Woolfian call “to think.”
My next major research project interrogates the political commitment of the major Italian actor, author, activist (and so much more), Franca Rame. Known widely as a stage and screen actor, but less recognized as a writer and producer, Rame was one of the most visible and pioneering artistic presences in postwar Italy. Deeply engaged in Marxist theory, concerned for the working classes and women, her main medium of expression was the stage, which she shared frequently with her partner in life and art, Dario Fo. Though I examine Rame’s creative output, I shift the focus to recognize her contributions as a public intellectual, activist, and politician.
