My research and writing occurs at the intersections of Italian studies and theater and performance studies, in addition to smaller projects grounded in literature and cinema. Performance theory and feminist theory are fundamental critical approaches that I take to my work, and increasingly critical race theory. “Feeling” history is also a key practice in my scholarship and I enjoyed working through an ethnographically informed interview practice in preparation for my first book, The Theater of Narration: From the Peripheries of History to the Main Stages of Italy published by Northwestern University Press, 2021 (25% discount code: NUP2021 at www.nupress.northwestern.edu, or Amazon and many local bookstores, and now available in Italian.
After drafting a couple of new essays that examine Elena Ferrante’s feminist theory across her eight novels, as well as an essay, with another on its way analyzing some recent plays by Giuliana Musso, I have recently begun archival research for my second book that will explore the political thought of Franca Rame. Special thanks to the team at the State Archives in Verona, and the organization and openness of the Fondazione Fo Rame, directed by Fo and Rame’s granddaughter, Mattea Fo, for making this trove available to researchers.
